Chemical tanker operator Chemship has placed a repeat order with Dutch wind propulsion specialist Econowind to install VentoFoils on two additional vessels, strengthening its drive to cut fuel consumption and emissions.
In the second half of 2026, Chemical Contender and Chemical Fighter will each be fitted with four 16-metre ATEX-proof VentoFoils. The order builds on the performance of Chemical Challenger, the first chemical tanker to adopt wind-assisted ship propulsion (WASP), which was equipped with four VentoFoils in Rotterdam in early 2024.
According to Chemship, the system has delivered fuel savings of up to 15% when combined with onboard fuel optimisation software. “We are pushing ahead on sustainability in every area of our business,” said Niels Grotz, CEO of Chemship. “I am a firm believer in net zero shipping. The installation of VentoFoils on two more ships shows we are making meaningful progress towards a cleaner shipping future.”
Econowind also highlighted the significance of the repeat order. “Chemship has shown leadership by being the first chemical tanker operator to embrace wind-assisted propulsion,” said Chiel de Leeuw, Chief Commercial Officer at Econowind. “This repeat order is a strong endorsement of our technology.”
Chemship recently earned an EcoVadis Platinum rating, placing it among the top 1% of companies assessed worldwide for environmental, social and governance performance. In addition to wind propulsion, the company is implementing further efficiency measures, including advanced hull coatings, premium lubricants and boss cap fins.
The new installations will support Chemship’s broader sustainability roadmap and help manage emissions costs under evolving regulations such as FuelEU Maritime.
