A global terminal in the Port of Cartagena, Colombia has placed an order for 25 Konecranes Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes, along with retrofits for 10 existing RTGs. The deal, signed in Q3 2025, also includes upgrades for 37 third-party RTGs. Deliveries will run in five batches, starting in Q4 2026 and concluding in Q1 2028.

The investment is part of a broad modernization program aimed at creating a unified crane setup capable of handling peak container flows with minimal unplanned downtime. The terminal already operates Konecranes Straddle Carriers and Reach Stackers.

Konecranes’ advanced technology will enable supervised truck lane operations and remotely supervised stacking. Features such as truck guidance and lift prevention systems will enhance safety, while supervised gantry moves will increase efficiency. The RTGs will be fully integrated with the terminal’s IT and Operational Technology infrastructure, including networks, yard controls and remote operating stations.

“Our RTG technology comes with an exceptionally high productivity promise. This level of performance – combined with the globally proven reliability of our cranes – enables the round-the-clock operations that customers depend upon,” said Heikki Kreku, Director RTG at Konecranes.

Recognized in the World Bank and S&P Global’s Container Port Performance Index 2023, Cartagena is among the world’s top-performing container terminals. This order highlights Konecranes’ “path to port automation,” offering scalable steps from smart features to remote supervision and full automation, helping terminals boost productivity and safety while advancing digitalization and decarbonization.
