Sarens, a specialist in heavy lifting and engineered transport, recently completed a challenging project in Sarnia, Canada, involving the extraction of large barges from the St. Clair River near Purdy’s Fish Market. The operation showcased the capabilities of the company’s LTM 1250 6.1 All Terrain Crane and its skilled Canadian team.
Despite harsh winter conditions—freezing temperatures, heavy rain, and frozen ground—Sarens successfully lifted barges measuring 3×12 metres, nearly 2 metres high, and weighing over 15 tons. The crane operated on its main boom in base load configuration, with careful planning to avoid interference with nearby power lines used for air traffic and to maintain a safe distance from the shoreline.
Sarens also provided the transportation of the barges by truck from the riverbank back to Toronto, further demonstrating its turnkey project capabilities.
With a strong presence in Canada, Sarens has built a solid reputation through complex operations and major projects. These include supporting Shell’s Polaris Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project in Alberta and lifting 9.4-ton girders for the renovation of Toronto’s Union Station flying garden.
