Stena Line Ports Ventspils JSC in Latvia has officially put into operation its first electric Konecranes Gottwald ESP.7 Mobile Harbor Crane, marking a milestone in the port’s modernisation and decarbonisation strategy. Ordered in mid-2024 and delivered in the first quarter of 2025, the crane is now fully operational at the Port of Ventspils, a key trade hub linking the Nordics and Central Europe.

The ESP.7 crane, part of Konecranes’ hybrid and electric equipment range, is powered primarily by electricity drawn from the harbor mains. It also features an onboard hybrid system with a diesel generator and ultracapacitors for use when grid power is unavailable, significantly reducing emissions and operational costs compared to conventional diesel cranes.

“This new crane delivers both the performance and efficiency we need to support a broad range of cargo operations,” said Mārtiņš Ziemanis, Managing Director of Stena Line Ports Ventspils. “Its hybrid drive aligns perfectly with our goals to lower emissions and modernise our infrastructure.”

With a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes, the mobile harbor crane will handle container traffic as well as general, project, and bulk cargo. It replaces a 1988-model Gottwald crane inherited from the previous port operator, signalling a leap forward in technology and environmental performance.

Hans-Jürgen Schneider, Regional Sales Manager at Konecranes Port Solutions, emphasised the broader impact of this delivery: “Our hybrid and electrification technologies are helping ports like Ventspils meet their sustainability goals while remaining operationally flexible.”
