Mammoet has played a key role in reaching a major milestone for the Portal North Bridge project—an infrastructure upgrade set to transform rail transit between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City. Working in collaboration with Skanska-Traylor Joint Venture and Carver Marine, Mammoet supported the transport and installation of three massive bridge sections that will replace the aging and unreliable Portal Bridge.

Each new span, measuring over 120 meters (approximately 400 feet), was assembled at the Port of Coeymans and transported via barge down the Hudson River. The bridge sections were transloaded onto a mid-river staging area, then jacked up using Mammoet’s Mega Jack system and carefully positioned on their final columns. For the East and West sections, Mammoet also employed slide track systems for precise placement.

The use of the Mega Jack significantly accelerated the lifting process, allowing the team to manage tight tidal windows efficiently and maintain accuracy during installation.

The new fixed-span bridge, standing 15 meters above the water, will eliminate delays caused by the outdated swing mechanism of the current bridge and improve rail traffic flow for Amtrak and New Jersey Transit.

Sidney King, Project Manager at Mammoet, noted, “Our team’s expertise ensured a smooth operation in close coordination with our partners. We are proud to contribute to a project that will deliver lasting benefits to the region’s transportation infrastructure.”
