Celebrating 25 years of innovation, Liebherr’s Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) crane remains a benchmark in container handling. Renowned for reliability, efficiency, and advanced technology, the Liebherr RTG has transformed port operations worldwide.

At the heart of its success is Liebherr’s state-of-the-art electrical drive and control system, paired with an eight-rope reeving system that enhances load stability and minimizes operator fatigue. The RTG’s single hoist drum design ensures high power density while optimizing energy efficiency.

Liebherr has been at the forefront of sustainability, pioneering dual-powered RTGs that integrate cable reeling drums with gensets. This innovation paved the way for fully electric and hybrid RTGs, significantly reducing emissions and energy consumption, reinforcing the company’s commitment to green technology.

Automation has also played a key role in Liebherr’s RTG evolution. Early advancements such as automatic steering, destination control, and stack profiling have now developed into full and semi-automatic RTG solutions, enhancing operational efficiency.

Charlie McCarthy, Managing Director – Engineering at Liebherr Container Cranes, noted, “Innovation and sustainability have driven our RTG’s success. As we celebrate 25 years, we are excited to continue shaping the future of container handling.”

Declan O’Sullivan, Managing Director of Sales, added, “Liebherr RTGs have been built to exceed customer expectations, and we remain committed to delivering solutions that support ports and terminals worldwide.”
