Cimolai Technology has completed the lifting and erection of the main girder of the first 800-tonne rail-mounted Goliath crane currently under construction at the Port of Chioggia. Rising to nearly 110 metres, the operation marks the conclusion of a critical technical phase in one of the most complex heavy-lift crane projects undertaken in Europe.

The first crane is scheduled to be fully assembled by the end of 2025, while erection and assembly of the second unit will be completed by spring 2026. Two separate barge load-outs—one for each crane—are planned for summer 2026.

Cimolai Technology is responsible for the engineering, manufacturing and delivery of the two rail-mounted Goliath cranes, which are designed for heavy naval lifting operations. Each crane will feature a span of 118 metres and a total height of 110 metres. When operating in tandem, the two units will be capable of lifting up to 1,600 tonnes, offering significant operational flexibility.

A key innovation of the project lies in its delivery concept. Both cranes will be transported fully assembled, tested and ready for operation by sea on a dedicated barge, allowing installation at the final shipyard site without disrupting ongoing operations. The structures will be shipped from Cimolai Technology’s Chioggia facility to their final destination in Monfalcone, near Trieste.

The project is supported by companies within the Cimolai Technology Group, with ACCS – Armando Cimolai Centro Servizi producing the structural components, while the Val da Rio logistics area serves as a hub for pre-assembly, testing and shipment.

Roberto Cimolai, CEO of the Cimolai Technology Group, said: “The completion of the lifting of the first crane’s main girder represents a symbolic goal of Cimolai Technology’s innovative capabilities. It is the result of outstanding teamwork combining engineering excellence, cutting-edge technology and top-level logistical organisation.”

Matteo Gasparato, President of the North Adriatic Sea Port Authority (AdSP MAS), added: “Today’s operation highlights the yet untapped potential of the Port of Chioggia. Planned dredging works and a permanent AdSP office in 2026 will further strengthen the port’s role and its connection with industry and the local community.”
