Stena Bulk has announced plans to register up to five of its Suezmax tankers under the Swedish flag, marking a significant step for both the company and Sweden’s maritime industry. At 275 meters long and with a gross tonnage of 81,000 tonnes, these vessels will be the largest ever to sail under Sweden’s flag.

This decision highlights Stena Bulk’s long-term commitment to Swedish shipping and aligns with recent government reforms aimed at revitalizing the national maritime sector. Key changes—such as eliminating stamp duty on ship registrations, improving the Swedish Ship Register, and proposing a competitive tonnage tax—have begun attracting new investment and influencing shipowners’ decisions.

Currently, Sweden has no Suezmax tankers on its registry. Stena Bulk’s move fills that gap and strengthens national control over vital transport infrastructure amidst evolving geopolitical conditions.

The company is working closely with Swedish authorities and trade unions to ensure a smooth transition, with a strong focus on crew safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. The goal is to complete the flagging process by 1st July 2025.

Erik Hånell, President & CEO of Stena Bulk, stated: “This is a natural and timely step. We are acting in line with new government conditions and answering the need for greater national capacity in deep-sea shipping.”

The initiative is also expected to boost demand for Swedish maritime professionals and enhance Sweden’s influence in international regulatory forums, including the EU and the IMO.
