ABB has been awarded a contract by West Sea Shipyard in Viana do Castelo, Portugal, to supply integrated power, propulsion, and automation systems for six new offshore patrol vessels (OPVs) for the Portuguese Navy. The vessels are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2031.

The new OPVs will feature ABB’s Azipod propulsion system, Onboard DC Grid power system, and the ABB Ability System 800xA control system. These technologies will enhance operational efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and lower emissions, contributing to more sustainable naval operations.

“ABB’s integrated power, propulsion, and automation system was a choice of confidence for us, providing flexibility, reliability, performance, and fuel efficiency for better environmental performance,” said Renato Amorim, Director at West Sea Shipyard.

ABB’s Azipod propulsion, a steerable, gearless electric drive system, will improve the vessels’ maneuverability and efficiency, cutting fuel consumption compared to conventional shaftline systems. The Onboard DC Grid, a compact and modular power platform, allows for seamless integration of energy storage and alternative power sources, further optimizing energy use and minimizing emissions.

Additionally, the ABB Ability System 800xA will provide an advanced automation solution, ensuring seamless vessel operations by integrating onboard systems into a single user-friendly interface. ABB will also supply its Power and Energy Management System (PEMS), forming the core of the ships’ power and control networks.

ABB continues to strengthen its presence in the naval and coast guard market, with recent contracts for the German, Spanish, Dutch, Belgian, Canadian, and Finnish maritime authorities.
