EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg GmbH has placed an order for 15 Hybrid Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers. The order, booked at the end of 2024, marks the adoption of Konecranes’ latest modular straddle carrier design, which allows for easy drive retrofits to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The new units are set for delivery by July 2026.
As one of Europe’s leading terminal operators, the EUROGATE Group handles over 12 million TEUs annually across nine locations in Europe and Africa. The company has relied on Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers for the past 25 years, deploying several hundred units across its German network. This latest investment underscores EUROGATE’s confidence in Konecranes’ technology and commitment to reducing carbon emissions in port operations.
The newly ordered straddle carriers feature an innovative modular powertrain design, enabling future upgrades to zero-emission power sources with minimal modifications. Traditional drive upgrades required extensive rebuilds, but Konecranes’ latest design simplifies the transition to battery-electric or hydrogen-powered operations.
Johannes Stelten, Managing Director of EUROGATE Container Terminal Hamburg, highlighted the significance of this investment: “The flexibility to make powertrain upgrades makes this a future-proof investment. Konecranes is helping us move towards CO2-neutral operations while maintaining the high efficiency our customers expect.”
Peter Kania, Sales Director of the Straddle Carrier business unit at Konecranes, emphasized the importance of this milestone: “The new modular design of Konecranes Noell Straddle Carriers represents a new era in container handling by combining adaptability with sustainable performance. It’s fitting that EUROGATE, one of our most trusted customers, is taking this step towards eco-efficient operations.”
The straddle carriers will also be equipped for TIC 4.0, an industry-standard framework for advanced data transmission, enabling enhanced operational insights and performance monitoring.
