Bruce Power has successfully completed the installation of all eight steam generators in Unit 3, marking a significant achievement in its Life-Extension Program and Major Component Replacement (MCR) Project. The final step took place on February 12, when the steam drum was placed atop the row of generators.

The Unit 3 MCR outage, which began in 2023, remains on track for completion in 2026, ensuring continued delivery of clean, reliable electricity for Ontario’s growing energy needs. Experts predict the province’s electricity demand could rise by as much as 75% in the coming years.

Over the past six months, Bruce Power and the Steam Generator Replacement Team (SGRT)—a joint venture between Aecon and SGT—executed the complex removal and replacement of 100-tonne steam generators. Mammoet’s towering PTC-35 crane, standing over 100 meters high, played a crucial role in the operation, lifting the components through the roof of Bruce A station.

“This was a huge undertaking that required over 18 months of planning,” said Rob Hoare, Vice-President of MCR Execution at Bruce Power. “Thanks to collaboration between our partners and skilled tradespeople, we achieved this milestone safely and efficiently.”

The Unit 3 project demonstrates Ontario’s strong nuclear industry, with 97% of the $250 million cost being reinvested into the province. Looking ahead, Bruce Power and SGRT have secured a $700-million contract to replace steam generators in Units 5, 7, and 8, reinforcing Ontario’s commitment to clean energy and economic growth.
