The Port of Salalah has completed a major expansion, increasing its container capacity from 4.5 million to 6.5 million TEUs. This investment cements its position as a key regional hub with strategic access to the Middle East, the Indian Subcontinent, and East Africa.

As part of the upgrade, APM Terminals has developed a new access road, an electrical substation, and expanded reefer capacity by 2,000 plugs. The port’s efficiency is set to rise with the addition of 10 new STS cranes capable of handling ultra-large vessels, 12 hybrid RTG cranes, and an upgraded fleet of terminal trucks and handling equipment.

Port of Salalah CEO Steven Yoogalingam emphasized the impact of this investment: “Our commitment to Oman and the region is reflected in these enhancements, ensuring seamless operations and fostering economic growth.”

Oman’s Director General of Ports, Muhanna bin Moosa bin Baqer, highlighted that this $300 million investment aligns with Oman Vision 2040, strengthening the country’s position in global trade.

Ranked the world’s second most efficient container port in the 2023 CPPI, Salalah continues to implement Lean practices for improved efficiency. The port is also a key component of the Gemini network, with the first Gemini vessel call scheduled for February 18.

Yoogalingam noted, “This marks a significant milestone in the Gemini network, reinforcing Salalah’s role in global shipping.” These enhancements ensure the port remains a vital trade gateway, meeting the evolving needs of the industry.
