Manitowoc has set a new benchmark for tower crane innovation with the launch of the Potain MCT 2205 at Bauma China 2024. This topless tower crane, designed and manufactured in Zhangjiagang, boasts an impressive 80-meter jib and a maximum lifting capacity of 80 tons.
The MCT 2205 merges the best of both worlds: the lifting power of Potain’s largest hammerhead cranes with the streamlined advantages of flat-top designs. The result is a crane that offers simplified transport, faster assembly, and a compact profile, making it ideal for congested urban jobsites and complex infrastructure projects.
Despite its status as Zhangjiagang’s largest crane, the MCT 2205 is engineered for logistical simplicity. The entire top-slewing structure, including all 11 sections of the jib, can be transported using just 16 trailers or containers. On-site, the crane’s proven mast telescoping system is compatible with Potain’s R99A and R910A mast sections, allowing for seamless integration and versatility.
The MCT 2205 delivers exceptional lifting capabilities, making it ideal for handling heavy loads across large jobsites. With PA950 fixing angles, it can reach a height under hook of 71 meters, extending to 99.9 meters with PA952 fixing angles. The crane can handle a 23.5-ton payload at the jib’s full length of 80 meters and offers its maximum 80-ton capacity between 5 and 26.3 meters. Configurations with shorter jib lengths push performance even further, accommodating up to 72.9 tons on a 30-meter assembly.
To address site-specific challenges, the MCT 2205 comes with two counterjib options: a full-length 25.2-meter version and a more compact 20.2-meter design for tighter spaces. Up to 124,000 kg of ballast ensures optimal stability and performance, even on high-demand projects.
Operators will appreciate the crane’s V140S Vision Cab, which prioritizes ergonomics and visibility. The MCT 2205 is powered by advanced mechanisms, including the 280 LVFC 200 Optima hoisting winch, equipped with 1,007 meters of rope and a robust 280 hp/212 kW motor capable of lifting 80 tons at speeds of up to 12 meters per minute. The 25 DVFC 35 trolley system and four RVFC 194 Optima+ slewing motors ensure precise and efficient horizontal and rotational movements.
“Manitowoc has leveraged its decades of expertise in developing large-capacity tower cranes to design a topless crane that meets our customers’ lifting requirements in this new era of construction,” said Kwong Joon Leong, regional product manager at Manitowoc. He noted that the MCT 2205 is already generating significant interest from companies working on large-scale infrastructure projects, power plants, and other mega-projects demanding exceptional lifting power.
