DP World celebrates a groundbreaking moment in sustainable logistics as it welcomes eight fully electric straddle carriers for its upcoming £350m fourth berth at London Gateway. These innovative machines constitute the world’s first all-electric fleet at a port, serving the world’s inaugural all-electric berth.
Manufactured by Kalmar at a cost of £12m each, these straddle carriers, weighing around 62 tonnes, only require a 45-minute charge for up to four hours of operation. Emitting zero emissions, they represent a significant leap towards DP World’s goal of electrifying its global ports and terminals equipment by 2050.
Ahsan Agha, Vice President Port Operations at DP World London Gateway, hails the arrival of these electric carriers as a milestone for the industry. Coupled with the recent delivery of Europe’s largest quay cranes, the new berth is poised to future-proof DP World’s UK operations, ensuring service to the largest container ships and enhancing supply chain connectivity.
This move aligns with DP World’s commitment to sustainability, evidenced by the transition to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) at its UK terminals in Southampton and London Gateway. Named ‘Sustainability Company of the Year’ at Multimodal 2023, DP World aspires to lead the UK’s logistics sector in sustainability.
Beyond its UK terminals, DP World offers comprehensive logistics, forwarding, and European transport services, all integrated into its global network spanning 78 countries and handling 10% of world trade.
