MacGregor, a division of Cargotec, has secured a significant order to supply three cranes for a cable layer being built by global shipbuilder VARD. The contract, part of Cargotec’s first quarter 2024 order intake, includes a 100-tonne active heave-compensated (AHC) crane, a 20-tonne offshore crane, and a 3-tonne deck crane for Prysmian, the Italian owner’s third NB970 cable laying vessel from VARD.
Scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2025, the vessel will also feature MacGregor’s OnWatch solution, providing 24/7 technical service support worldwide. Equipped with advanced DP3 positioning and seakeeping systems, the 191-meter-long cable layer is designed for complex subsea operations, including simultaneous lay and burial with heavy-duty ploughs.
Pasi Lehtonen, Senior Vice President of Offshore Solutions at MacGregor, highlighted the company’s longstanding partnership with VARD and expressed satisfaction in supplying high-performance cranes for yet another project. MacGregor’s AHC cranes, known for their accuracy and resilience, are designed to operate in extreme environments, offering hydraulic or electric winch drives.
Construction of the vessel will commence at Vard Shipyards Romania – Tulcea, with completion in Norway and handover to the owner expected by the beginning of 2027.
