After commencing construction in 2001, Van Oord celebrates the successful completion of major maintenance on Dubai’s Palm Jumeirah, including the trunk, 16 palm leaves, and crescent. Addressing decades of beach erosion, Van Oord, contracted by Nakheel, elevated and shaped the 55-kilometer Palm beaches by half a meter. The project also involved the creation of three shore protection structures, or groynes, to combat erosion.
Van Oord utilized the trailing suction hopper dredger Volvox Olympia to restore the beaches, applying approximately 1.8 million cubic meters of sand. To ensure the sand’s quality met beach standards, an in-house-designed sieve facilitated the dredging process. Notably, Palm Jumeirah was Van Oord’s initial showcase project in Dubai, marking the beginning of the company’s involvement in various prestigious waterfront and infrastructure developments in the Middle East.
Van Oord’s local portfolio includes contributions to iconic landmarks like The World, Bluewaters Island, and the Dubai Harbour Masterplan. As the company’s track record in the region continues to expand, the Volvox Olympia is set to embark on two additional land reclamation projects in Dubai in the coming months.
