Kuenz Expands Presence in Belgian Market with Port of Limburg Partnership

Austrian crane manufacturer Kuenz is making significant strides in the Belgian market through a new partnership with the Port of Limburg, operator of the newly established inland container terminal in Genk. Kuenz is set to supply two RMG barge cranes as part of this collaboration, with delivery expected by Q1/2025. This development will bring Kuenz’s total count of intermodal cranes operating in Belgium to nine, excluding the ASC.

Benjamin Hermans, CEO of Port of Limburg, expressed confidence in the choice of Kuenz, citing their high-performance equipment and adept project management approach as decisive factors. The Port of Limburg’s new terminal in Genk has a maximum capacity of 350,000 TEU.

For Kuenz, beyond expanding its presence in the Belgian market, this partnership represents a valuable opportunity to contribute to the growth of Belgium’s combined transport sector. Vincent Pelletier, Area Sales Manager at Kuenz, emphasized their enthusiasm for this successful partnership and its alignment with Belgium’s goals to enhance combined transport and reduce CO2 emissions.

The forthcoming Genk terminal at the Port of Limburg will receive customized crane solutions, featuring a rail span of 41.2 meters, a waterside/landside cantilever of 20.5 meters and 12 meters, and the ability to stack containers up to four high. These cranes will be equipped with a rotating trolley and a fully electric 20/40 ft automatic spreader.

Notably, these cranes will employ patented technology that distinguishes them from traditional box constructions. The main girder of the cranes will have a round design, offering advantages such as reduced wind contact area, lower energy consumption, and minimized dynamic forces on the crane’s components. Additionally, the A-shape gantry structure design enhances stability and precision in positioning, thanks in part to a very stiff rope tower.
