Eiffage’s SEH, in partnership with Max Boegl, Plauen Stahl Technologie, Zwickauer Sonderstahlbau, and Hochtief Infrastructure, has secured a contract to construct a new bridge over the Rhine in Leverkusen, Germany. The total contract value is €358 million, with Eiffage’s portion amounting to €126 million.

The Rhineland Branch of Autobahn GmbH, responsible for Germany’s highway network, has awarded the contract for the 688-meter-long bridge, which will expand the A1 motorway connection between Leverkusen and Cologne to 2×4 lanes.

SEH, the lead contractor of the consortium, will manage various aspects of the project, including dismantling the existing steel structure, overseeing 25% of the new metal structure’s fabrication, anti-corrosion measures, and the assembly of steelwork and cables. Over 16,000 tonnes of steel components will be produced in Germany and transported along the Rhine waterway.

This initiative, aimed at upgrading the quality of Germany’s bridges, involves the replacement of an old structure with an optimized configuration. Construction is set to begin in September 2023, with completion anticipated by late 2027.

This contract adds to Eiffage’s previous achievements, including another consortium-based project for an initial 2×4-laned bridge in Leverkusen, scheduled for delivery in 2024 with a value of €180 million (Eiffage’s share: €116 million). The concurrent construction of the second bridge will replace the existing crossing, which is currently inadequate in capacity.

SEH has a track record of building significant metal structures in Germany, such as the Hochmosel Bridge, a substantial steel viaduct completed in 2020, and the Elbe and Zollelbe bridges in Magdeburg, both slated for delivery in 2023.
