Mammoet has introduced a zero emission option for SPMT (Self-propelled Modular Transporter) transport, now available for any trailer in its fleet. This groundbreaking development has been achieved through a conversion process for SPMT power pack units (PPUs), where the diesel powertrain inside existing trailers is replaced with an electric alternative. Once retrofitted, each trailer combination offers comparable power to industry-standard units, ensuring no compromise in performance.

The electric PPU not only significantly reduces noise levels at project sites, creating a safer and more productive work environment for both customers and colleagues, but also enables clearer communication among staff. Moreover, in locations with sound restrictions, longer operational windows can now be achieved.

This innovative system marks a remarkable stride towards zero emission on site, effectively eliminating the carbon footprint associated with SPMT transport. As a result, Mammoet’s customers can more easily meet increasingly stringent environmental legislation, mitigating the impact of transport phases on surrounding communities and infrastructure.

In addition to its environmental benefits, this zero emission solution exemplifies Mammoet’s strong commitment to the energy transition and its own sustainability efforts. By retrofitting existing SPMT fleets, Mammoet reduces waste and minimizes the need for additional fabrication, as opposed to sourcing new zero emission equipment.

The development of this solution was made possible through collaboration with a leading provider of zero-emissions powertrains for heavy industry and partial funding from the DKTI, a Dutch government program dedicated to developing climate technologies and logistics innovations.

The SPMT, pioneered by Mammoet in 1984 and with over 40,000 axle lines utilized globally, revolutionized the heavy industry by safely and efficiently maneuvering practically any load with precision. This latest advancement in its evolution holds tremendous significance, as it eliminates CO2 and NOx emissions entirely, guiding the way towards a sustainable future for heavy transport.
