Allelys has marked a significant achievement by completing the second of three project phases for the Dogger Bank B onshore converter station, a vital component of the world’s largest offshore wind farm.

The task at hand involved receiving four hefty transformers, each weighing 255 tonnes and measuring 9.3 meters in length, 4.2 meters in width, and 4.8 meters in height, at Albert Dock in the Port of Hull. Allelys had the responsibility of transporting these transformers to their final installation positions.

Initial assessments had indicated that Albert Dock might not be suitable for unloading the transformers, raising concerns about potential project delays. However, Allelys’ adept in-house engineering team devised a custom crane mat and load-spreading solution, allowing them to proceed with the lifting operations while safeguarding the quayside.

To safely unload the vessel, Allelys utilized the LG1550 mobile crane to transfer the transformers onto a 12-axle SPMT, which transported the loads to a suitable transshipment area. The transformers were then moved onto Allelys’ Faktor 5.5 girder frame trailer, boasting a 350-tonne capacity, in preparation for the journey to the installation site.

The girder frame transportation was conducted over four consecutive weekends, with one transformer moved at a time before returning to reload the next. This meticulously planned operation optimized efficiency and ensured the client received the transformers within a streamlined timeframe.

Upon arrival at the site, each transformer was installed using a combination of turntables, jacking, and skidding systems, enabling Allelys to seamlessly position them in their designated bays.

Jordan Heath, Project Manager at Allelys, expressed satisfaction with the project, noting, “This project was a great project to work on, and the smooth operation of delivering four transformers to four different bays over four consecutive weekends showcases Allelys’ expertise in power generation projects. We can efficiently engineer and deliver solutions tailored to each project’s needs while minimizing disruption for our clients.”
