Construction has started on APM Terminals Laldia in Chattogram, Bangladesh, a $550 million container terminal development that will add more than 800,000 TEU of annual handling capacity.
Developed in partnership with the Chittagong Port Authority and QNS Container Services, the project is a flagship investment under the Bangladesh–Denmark Government-to-Government partnership. APM Terminals and its partners will design, finance, build and operate the facility, while ownership of the port asset remains with Bangladesh.
Scheduled to become operational in 2030, Laldia will feature a deeper draft and extended quay capable of handling container vessels of up to 6,000 TEU, more than double Chattogram’s current limit of around 2,800 TEU.
“Breaking ground at Laldia is a promise turning into reality,” said Romesh David, CEO of APM Terminals Laldia. “We are building far more than a terminal by giving Bangladesh’s exporters deeper water, bigger ships, cleaner operations and a genuinely world-class gateway.”
The terminal will incorporate electrified cargo-handling equipment, solar power and shore-power-ready infrastructure as part of plans to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.
More than 1,000 jobs are expected to be created during construction, with over 500 positions once the terminal enters operation.
