PD Ports has expanded its bulk handling operations at Teesport with the delivery of a third electric LPS 550 mobile harbour crane from Liebherr.

The latest crane follows the successful commissioning of two identical LPS 550 units in 2023 and will further strengthen operational capacity at one of the UK’s largest deepwater ports. The new crane will focus on bulk cargo operations, supporting improved hatch coverage, faster vessel turnaround times and greater berth flexibility during peak demand periods.

Teesport handles approximately 26 to 28 million tonnes of cargo annually and plays a major role within the UK logistics and industrial supply chain. The port benefits from deepwater access, strong rail connectivity and direct road links serving bulk, container and project cargo sectors.

The electric powered LPS 550 combines a 144t lifting capacity with extended outreach capabilities, allowing operators to work larger vessel hatches more efficiently while reducing repositioning requirements. Operating entirely on shore power, the crane eliminates fuel consumption and supports quieter, lower emission port operations.

Grant Honzik, Business Unit Director for Bulks at PD Ports, said the investment strengthens long term operational resilience while increasing handling flexibility for customers. He added that the performance and reliability of the existing Liebherr cranes had already been proven through daily operations at Teesport.

The crane fleet is supported by Liebherr Great Britain service teams, with maintenance schedules coordinated around vessel and rail operations to minimise disruption and maximise uptime.

David Vaughan, Divisional Manager Maritime and Port Equipment at Liebherr Great Britain, said the continued expansion of the partnership reflects the strong operational performance and reliability of the LPS 550 cranes already operating at the port.
