Sarens Nears Completion of CVOW Project

Sarens is approaching the final phase of its work on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW), supporting one of the largest offshore wind developments in the United States.

Since operations began in 2023 at Portsmouth Marine Terminal, Sarens has managed the onshore marshalling and engineering scope for Virginia International Terminals. The work included handling 176 monopiles and 176 transition pieces, as well as pin piles, templates and three offshore substation topsides, each weighing around 4,000 tonnes.

The scale of operations required a highly efficient system to maintain long-term productivity. A key innovation was the use of engineered steel supports for monopiles, enabling full accessibility while meeting strict ground-bearing requirements. This approach helped maintain schedule consistency throughout the project.

In total, the campaign involved approximately 740 SPMT movements and 382 lifts using a Liebherr CC8800, highlighting the intensity of operations.

Environmental constraints also played a critical role. Offshore piling had to be completed outside restricted periods linked to whale migration. Through close coordination, all monopile installations were finished one month ahead of the deadline, avoiding delays.

As of March 2026, only ten transition pieces remain to be handled before completion of load-out activities.
