Volvo Group, Daimler Truck AG and Toyota Motor Corporation have signed a non-binding agreement to collaborate on fuel cell technology through their joint venture, cellcentric.
The agreement would see Toyota join cellcentric as an equal third shareholder alongside Volvo and Daimler Truck. The partners aim to accelerate the development, production and commercialisation of fuel cell systems for heavy-duty vehicles and other industrial applications.
As part of the collaboration, Toyota and cellcentric also plan to jointly develop and manufacture fuel cell unit cells, the core component of fuel cell systems, combining their respective technologies to create more competitive solutions.
The partnership brings together Volvo and Daimler Truck’s expertise in commercial vehicles with Toyota’s long-standing experience in fuel cell development and production. cellcentric is expected to serve as a central hub for fuel cell innovation, supporting both on- and off-road transport applications.
The companies also aim to support the development of hydrogen infrastructure by working with partners across the value chain, recognising hydrogen as a key solution for decarbonising heavy transport.
cellcentric, established in 2021, will continue to operate as an independent entity serving a broad customer base. The agreement remains non-binding, with further discussions ongoing before a final deal is concluded.
