RWE and Vestas seal Vanguard East deal

RWE has confirmed a second major turbine contract with Vestas for its Vanguard offshore wind developments in the UK, awarding the supplier a deal for the Vanguard East project off the Norfolk coast.

Under the agreement, Vestas will supply, deliver and commission 92 of its V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbines, one of the most powerful turbine models currently available. The contract follows a similar award for the Vanguard West project announced in February 2026.

Both projects are being developed in partnership with KKR and recently secured support through the UK’s Contract for Difference scheme under Allocation Round 7, reinforcing their commercial viability.

RWE is targeting a final investment decision for both Vanguard projects in summer 2026, with turbine commissioning for Vanguard East expected to begin in 2030. Once operational, the wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of around 1.5 million UK homes annually.

Located more than 45 kilometres offshore, the project will be connected to the UK grid via dedicated export cable infrastructure. The development forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s renewable energy capacity and long-term energy security.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, said the company is making strong progress towards delivering the projects, supported by partners and the wider supply chain. Vestas’ regional president Nils de Baar highlighted the importance of long-term collaboration in delivering reliable and affordable clean energy.

The Vanguard projects underline the continued expansion of offshore wind in the UK, with large-scale developments playing a key role in meeting decarbonisation targets and supporting future electricity demand.
