Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East are placing growing pressure on global supply chains, prompting the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) to warn the lifting sector against prioritising low-cost solutions over safety and quality.

According to LEEA chief executive Dr Ross Moloney, the ongoing conflict is driving price increases across the industry as supply routes are disrupted and raw material availability tightens. Attacks in the Red Sea and the effective shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz are already affecting the flow of petrochemicals, many of which are essential raw materials used in the manufacture of lifting equipment.

The resulting supply squeeze is making it more difficult for manufacturers and suppliers to place orders while pushing costs higher across the market. In an industry characterised by tight margins, Moloney notes that such pressures can create a temptation for buyers to seek cheaper alternatives when trusted suppliers face rising costs or longer lead times.

However, he cautions that switching to low-cost options during periods of market disruption can pose serious risks. Lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly the procurement of substandard personal protective equipment, highlight the dangers of prioritising price over quality and compliance.

Moloney emphasised that reputable manufacturers invest heavily in processes, skilled personnel and certification to deliver compliant and reliable lifting solutions. The cost of these products reflects not only materials and production but also safety standards and traceability.

With many LEEA members being small or family-owned companies built on long-term partnerships, the association is urging end users to maintain established supplier relationships during the current market instability.

LEEA says maintaining these partnerships will help ensure reliability, safety and best practice across the lifting sector while the industry navigates the economic consequences of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
