DP World has launched Insetify, a carbon inset trial designed to help ocean freight forwarding customers reduce Scope 3 emissions across key European trade lanes. The programme will initially be available to customers in Belgium, Portugal and Sweden.
Starting on 1 April, carbon inset credits will be automatically applied to customers booking ocean freight forwarding services with DP World in these markets. Qualifying importers and exporters will receive carbon credits every quarter based on their shipping volumes.
Customers shipping containerised cargo will receive carbon inset credits equal to 100 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per TEU shipped each quarter, at no additional cost. The offer applies once a minimum threshold of 25 TEUs per quarter is reached. For example, a customer shipping 50 TEUs during a quarter would receive credits equivalent to 5 tonnes of CO2e.
The trial builds on DP World’s existing Carbon Inset Programme at its UK ports in Southampton and London Gateway. Since its launch in January 2025, the UK programme has registered more than 250,000 TEUs and issued over 9,000 tonnes of carbon inset credits.
Unlike traditional carbon offsets, which support external projects such as tree planting, carbon insets reduce emissions directly within the supply chain through the use of lower-carbon fuels or more efficient transport solutions. The credits used in the programme are generated through the deployment of lower-carbon fuels within DP World Shipping Solutions.
The Insetify trial will also be supported by sustainability training aimed at helping customers better understand the programme and address emissions across their supply chains.
John Trenchard, vice president of sustainable international supply chains for Europe at DP World, said the initiative offers a practical approach to tackling residual emissions in ocean freight as part of a broader decarbonisation strategy.
