The arrival of 28 fully electrified equipment units at APM Terminals Suape marks an important milestone in the development of what is set to become Latin America’s first fully electrified port facility. Supplied by Sany and representing an investment of USD 47 million, the equipment will support the next technical phase as the terminal prepares for operations at the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial and Port Complex (Suape) in Pernambuco, Brazil.
The project forms part of a wider USD 350 million investment in the new Suape terminal, one of the largest private port developments currently underway in Brazil. With construction nearing completion, the project is now moving into its final stage.
“This is a crucial milestone for the project, which now enters the final stage of building the terminal’s main infrastructure,” says Daniel Rose, managing director of APM Terminals Suape and Pecém.
Once operational, the terminal is expected to improve logistics efficiency in northeast Brazil while strengthening competitiveness for exporters and reducing the cost of imported goods. Expanded berth windows will allow more vessel calls and improve connectivity with global markets, potentially attracting new direct services to the Far East and Europe.
The terminal will initially be capable of handling up to 400,000 teu per year, representing a 55 percent increase in capacity for the port complex. The project has already created more than 2,000 direct jobs, along with thousands of indirect opportunities.
A key feature of the terminal is its fully electrified equipment fleet, which eliminates the need for fossil fuels during operations. The equipment includes two ship-to-shore cranes with a 70-metre outreach capable of handling vessels longer than 366 metres, along with seven rubber-tyred gantry cranes for container yard operations. The fleet also includes reach stackers, forklifts and terminal tractors, with operations expected to begin in the second half of 2026.
