Berge Bulk and Anemoi Marine Technologies have completed the installation of four folding Rotor Sails on the 208,000 DWT Newcastlemax bulk carrier Berge Meru, marking their second wind-propulsion collaboration.
The 5-metre diameter, 35-metre high Rotor Sails were installed at Yiu Lian Dockyards in China in December 2025. The vessel has since completed its maiden voyage to Singapore with the system in operation. Designed to harness wind power for auxiliary propulsion, the technology supports reductions in fuel consumption and associated emissions.
The project builds on the earlier installation of four identical Anemoi Rotor Sails on the Berge Neblina, a Valemax vessel delivered in June 2024. Operational insights from that installation, combined with ongoing performance monitoring, have helped refine the integration on Berge Meru and strengthened confidence in Rotor Sail technology as a scalable decarbonisation solution.
A key feature of the system is its folding capability, allowing the sails to be lowered to accommodate port operations and air-draught restrictions. During extreme weather, the units can simply be switched off, automatically ceasing thrust generation without requiring retraction.
Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi Marine Technologies, said the project demonstrates how wind propulsion can be incorporated into large commercial bulk carriers in a practical and operationally flexible manner, highlighting Berge Bulk’s continued commitment to innovative emissions-reduction strategies.
