Sarens completes desert heavy lifts for Algeria gas project

Sarens has completed a major heavy lifting campaign in Algeria’s remote southeastern desert, supporting the development of the Tinrhert gas fields at Alrar (EPC2–Lot1). The contract was awarded by Petrofac on behalf of national energy company Sonatrach, with operations carried out between March and July 2025.

The project involved the installation of 11 heavy components essential to gas infrastructure, delivered under extreme conditions including confined working areas, temperatures exceeding 50°C, frequent sandstorms and complex logistics linked to the isolated site.

Key equipment included a 600-tonne CC-2800 crawler crane, configured with a 54-metre main boom, and an AC-140 crane in support. Both units were transported overland from Sarens’ base in Oran, covering 1,600 km in up to 10 days. On-site assembly required a further 10 days.

The main lift centred on the fire water tank roof, an 88.9-tonne structure raised at a 30.9-metre radius. Due to limited space, the CC-2800 performed slewing and crawling movements with the load to achieve precise positioning, supported by detailed lift planning and strict safety controls.

Sarens implemented intensive HSE measures, including stability planning for sandy ground, dust and heat protection, hydration protocols and continuous mechanical support to ensure continuity.

The project continues, with Sarens recently mobilising an additional 400-tonne Terex Demag CC2400-1 crawler crane to support upcoming lifts, including two columns weighing 411 tonnes each.

The operation supports a strategically important national gas development expected to strengthen energy security and regional economic growth.
