Baria Serece Phu My Port, strategically located on Vietnam’s Thi Vai River, has strengthened its operational capabilities with the deployment of a Liebherr LPS 550 portal crane. Serving as a key gateway for vessels transporting agri-commodities, fertilisers and general cargo, the terminal is benefitting from faster vessel turnaround times and improved productivity.
Designed for high-throughput bulk handling, the LPS 550 features a 144-tonne lifting capacity, a 48-metre boom and Liebherr’s hydrostatic drive system. Operating primarily via a high-voltage electric power supply, the crane offers strong energy efficiency, supported by a diesel backup for grid interruptions. Its four-rope grab system ensures powerful and consistent material flow, while storm anchors and a reinforced structure maintain stability in challenging weather conditions.
Performance tests exceeded expectations, recording handling rates of up to 1,250 tonnes per hour. In its first year, the crane achieved 4,000 operating hours and currently operates up to 22 hours per day—supporting Phu My Port’s throughput of nearly 7 million tonnes annually.
Mounted on rails, the crane’s portal undercarriage keeps the quay accessible for trucks and conveyor systems, ensuring efficient landside logistics on limited space. Supported by Liebherr’s regional service team, the LPS 550 provides Baria Serece with reliability and scalability as Vietnam’s trade volumes continue to rise.
“Space, cycle time and reliability shaped the engineering decisions at Baria Serece,” said Andreas Ritschel, General Manager Sales Mobile Harbour Cranes at Liebherr-Rostock GmbH. “The LPS 550 delivers speed and stability without compromising quay access.”
