The Saguenay Port Authority has placed an order for a Konecranes Gottwald ESP.6B Mobile Harbor Crane to enhance its cargo handling capabilities. Scheduled for delivery in Q3 2025, the new crane is a key component of the port’s expansion strategy to accommodate increasing traffic.
Located on North America’s only navigable fjord, Port Saguenay provides year-round access to north-central Quebec. Its natural deepwater harbor supports vessels up to 100,000 tonnes, making it a crucial hub for bulk and general cargo. The new crane acquisition marks the beginning of a partnership between the port authority and Konecranes, selected for its efficient, eco-friendly technology and high-performance electric drives.
The ESP.6B crane will primarily operate on an external power supply, significantly reducing emissions compared to traditional diesel-powered models. It features an electric cable reel at the boom top, enabling the use of an electric hook rotator and spreaders. With a maximum lifting capacity of 125 tonnes, it will handle a variety of cargo, including de-icing salt, iron ore, and containers.
“By enabling the use of electricity, the Konecranes equipment will be instrumental in reducing our carbon footprint. With its advanced handling features, this crane is a valuable asset for our port’s growth and industrial zone,” said Carl Laberge, CEO of the Saguenay Port Authority.
Andreas Moeller, Senior Sales Manager at Konecranes Port Solutions, highlighted the crane’s environmental benefits: “Our industry-leading electric drive concept played a decisive role in securing this agreement. We are excited to support Saguenay Port Authority in reducing emissions while maintaining top operational performance.”
