The Port of Tilbury has strengthened its cargo handling capabilities with the arrival of its third Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour crane. Delivered fully assembled on 18 January via the Baltic Sea, the crane joins Tilbury’s growing fleet to support bulk and heavy lift operations, including Aggregate Industries’ upcoming cement grinding facility.
With a 54-metre outreach and a 144-tonne lifting capacity, the LHM 550 is designed for high-volume throughput. It features an over-pressure system to prevent material ingress when handling granulated blast furnace slag (GBFS), a low-carbon cement alternative. The crane’s corrosion-resistant paint finish further enhances durability in port environments.
Aligned with Forth Ports’ net-zero strategy, the crane incorporates green technologies such as the LieGEN energy recovery system, HVO fuel compatibility, and an electric-ready design for future zero-emission operations.
Paul Dale, COO of Forth Ports, emphasized the company’s investment in sustainable technology, stating, “The Liebherr LHM 550 supports our ambitious green targets and growing cargo operations.” Liebherr’s Robert Alexander praised the port’s commitment to operational excellence, highlighting the crane’s role in enhancing efficiency and sustainability.
