On November 14, the inauguration ceremony of Chancay Port, COSCO Shipping’s first green and smart port investment in South America, was held in Peru. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Peruvian President Dina Boluarte attended the event via video link, underscoring the port’s strategic significance.

Situated 78 kilometers north of Lima on the central Peruvian coastline, Chancay Port boasts a prime geographic location with exceptional logistics connectivity. This natural deep-water port features a 1,500-meter dock with four berths—two for containers and two multi-purpose—capable of accommodating the world’s largest container ships. The port is designed for an annual throughput of 1 million TEUs, 6 million tons of bulk cargo, and 160,000 vehicles. Additional infrastructure includes storage yards, warehouses, and a 1.8-kilometer tunnel connecting the port to the Pan-American Highway, ensuring seamless access to Peru’s economic hinterland.

Chancay Port stands out for its environmentally friendly operations. The integration of intelligent loading and unloading equipment and the use of pure electric container trucks have led to over 25% energy savings. Following a successful trial phase, plans are in place to establish a regional logistics distribution hub at the COSCO Shipping Chancay Peru Terminal.

The port’s two newly launched direct container shipping routes linking Shanghai Port and Chancay Port have reduced transit times for goods from Peru to China to just 23 days. Additionally, the introduction of ro-ro services is set to position the port as a leading automotive distribution hub in South America.

The Chancay Port Project Phase I is expected to create over 8,000 direct jobs, significantly boosting local employment. Beyond economic benefits, the project has a strong ecological focus. Wildlife rescue centers have been established to rehabilitate penguins, seals, and bird species, while efforts to restore wetlands, coastlines, and natural habitats enhance regional biodiversity.
