SNCF Réseau has awarded Eiffage a contract worth more than €70 million to deliver major railway engineering works linked to the future Seine North Europe Canal.
The project involves modifications to the Amiens to Laon railway line, where the future canal will intersect the national rail network. To allow construction and future operation of the canal, around 3,000 metres of double track railway will be diverted and rebuilt.
Works include the construction of a 908 metre railway bridge spanning the canal, together with a 77 metre Warren type railway viaduct crossing the surrounding valley. The programme is scheduled to run over three and a half years.
The contract was awarded to Eiffage as part of a consortium, bringing together several divisions of the group. Eiffage Génie Civil will lead work on the main infrastructure, earthworks and concrete structures, while Eiffage Métal will deliver the Warren type bridge and mixed structures. Eiffage Rail will handle track installation and rail connections, with deep foundation specialist Pro Fond also supporting the project.
The development forms part of wider railway renovation works required before the Seine North Europe Canal can be filled and brought into operation.
Construction of the structures is expected to begin in 2027, with commissioning of the new Amiens to Laon line connection planned for February 2029.
