DP World has strengthened its presence in Romania with the deployment of two Liebherr mobile harbor cranes and the completion of a 119,000 m² multimodal terminal platform at Constanta South Container Terminal (CSCT). The investments significantly enhance port capacity and support the growing demand for resilient European supply chains, reinforcing Constanta’s role as a key gateway between the Black Sea and mainland Europe.

The latest developments follow DP World’s 20th anniversary in Romania and build on more than €250 million invested in the country since 2004. Alongside recent projects—including a new RO-RO terminal, a project cargo facility in Constanta, and the inland intermodal hub in Aiud—the upgrades form part of DP World’s long-term strategy to improve regional connectivity.

The two Liebherr mobile harbor cranes increase CSCT’s annual handling capacity to 810,000 TEU. They are expected to raise throughput by up to 280,000 tonnes in 2026–2027, cut grain vessel waiting times by more than 66%, improve container vessel efficiency by around 20%, and reduce fuel consumption. The expansion comes at a critical moment, as Constanta has taken on a greater role in European cargo flows following disruptions to Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

In parallel, the new multimodal terminal transforms previously undeveloped land into a high-capacity storage and handling area for containerised, oversized and project cargo. Adding approximately 340,000 tonnes of annual capacity, the facility removes a longstanding operational bottleneck and supports nearshoring and reshoring trends, particularly in the automotive sector.

Both projects benefited from EU co-financing, underlining DP World’s ability to attract institutional partners to develop strategic trade infrastructure. The company expects the investments to support continued growth in Romanian and regional trade while strengthening integrated and sustainable supply chains across Europe.
