As world leaders gather in Brazil for COP30, Ørsted has announced a historic milestone: the company has met its science-based 2025 decarbonisation target and reduced its carbon emissions by 98 percent, becoming the first energy company to fully transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

Once among Europe’s most fossil-fuel-intensive utilities, Ørsted now generates 99 percent of its energy from renewable sources. This transformation has been driven by large-scale offshore wind deployment, the closure of coal-fired plants, conversion to certified sustainable biomass, divestment of oil and gas operations, electrification of its vehicle fleet and covering its electricity use with renewable certificates.

“Decarbonisation is at the heart of Ørsted,” said Ingrid Reumert, Senior Vice President for Global Stakeholder Relations. With a 99 percent renewable energy share and a 98 percent emissions reduction, Ørsted’s green transformation is effectively complete.”

Reumert stressed that the achievement comes at a crucial time, as the past decade has been the warmest on record and global emissions continue to rise. While Ørsted celebrates this milestone, the company is now focused on the next phase of its net-zero journey: reducing upstream and downstream emissions across its full value chain by 2040. This includes decarbonising materials such as steel and copper and transitioning to low-carbon maritime fuels.

Ørsted’s landmark moment aligns with calls for accelerated climate action at COP30. “Rapid electrification through renewables is essential,” Reumert added. “Governments must provide predictable frameworks so industry can unlock the investment needed for a clean, secure and affordable energy future.”

Since launching its renewable vision in 2009, setting its first science-based targets in 2017 and closing its last coal plant in 2024, Ørsted has now completed its green transformation and continues to lead the energy sector toward net zero.
