Petrodec’s OBANA jack-up vessel has been equipped with advanced offshore crane technology from Liebherr, marking a key milestone in offshore decommissioning capabilities. The collaboration highlights Liebherr’s continued role as a trusted technology and service partner in the offshore sector.

OBANA, a self-elevating heavy-lift jack-up, is the result of Petrodec’s innovative engineering—merging two refurbished platforms with a newly constructed mid-section. To support its operations in the North Sea, the vessel is outfitted with two BOS cranes (each with a 60-tonne safe working load and 70-metre boom) and one MTC 78000 crane with a 2,000-tonne lifting capacity.

Based in the Netherlands, Petrodec has been active in offshore energy since 2019, focusing on the safe and sustainable decommissioning of oil and gas infrastructure. The OBANA project, initiated in 2021, culminated in the successful crane installations and handover in late 2024.

Liebherr’s involvement included technical coordination and on-site assembly, with parallel day and night shifts to complete the installation of all three cranes. “This project shows what’s possible with trust and clear communication,” said Armin Seidel, Area Sales Manager at Liebherr Rostock. “Our collaboration with Petrodec has strengthened through this intensive effort.”

Technical Advisor Phillip-Andreas Kugler added, “Despite the complexity, our team managed the installation efficiently. It was a great example of teamwork and commitment.”
