Liebherr-Werk Ehingen GmbH has officially launched construction of its new customer centre and dispatch wing in the Ehingen-Berg industrial estate, marking the company’s largest industrial expansion in southern Germany. The ground-breaking ceremony follows the purchase of a 54-hectare site in June 2025, directly adjacent to Liebherr’s service centre opened in 2021.
The new development covers more than 500,000 square metres and will complement the existing Ehingen plant on Münsinger Straße, which has been operating since 1969 on a one-million-square-metre site. The expansion aims to streamline production processes and meet rising global demand for larger cranes. Certain process steps will be relocated from the main plant, with the first phase including a state-of-the-art customer centre, dispatch wing, and the return of rented logistics space.
“This expansion is an important sign for Baden-Württemberg as an industrial location, especially in the current economic climate,” said Manuel Hagel, CDU parliamentary group leader in Stuttgart. Regional Minister Klaus Tappeser highlighted the project’s role in securing long-term prosperity for the region.
Local leaders welcomed the investment as a strong commitment to Ehingen. Mayor Alexander Baumann described it as “an investment with foresight in our home region,” while District Administrator Heiner Scheffold called it “a benefit for our entire region.”
With more than 5,000 employees, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen is the Alb-Donau district’s largest employer. Commercial Director Daniel Pitzer confirmed the site will operate under the name LWE-Süd and emphasised the company’s focus on sustainable operations, including an electric vehicle fleet and energy-efficient buildings.
In 2024, Liebherr-Werk Ehingen delivered around 2,000 mobile and crawler cranes, generating €3.2 billion in turnover. The Liebherr Group as a whole reported revenues exceeding €14 billion with over 50,000 employees worldwide.
