Lankhorst Ropes has supplied ultra-heavy lift slings to Allseas’ Pioneering Spirit for transporting and lowering a 7,300-tonne jacket for the BorWin 5 offshore wind project in Germany. The Lankhorst Gama 98 slings held the massive structure above the vessel’s stern during the two-day journey to the installation site.
Designed for use with the Pioneering Spirit’s Jacket Lifting System, the eight 25-meter endless slings feature Gama 98 Ultra Heavy Lift rope construction. Manufactured in Portugal to a strict length tolerance of ±1.5%, the slings were proof loaded ahead of the project in line with DNV-ST-N001 standards. The jacket lift system includes six blocks, each guiding two endless slings, enabling safe and precise handling of heavy offshore structures.
Following BorWin 5, the slings will be reused for future installation and decommissioning projects, adapting to different load profiles.
Over the past decade, Lankhorst has advanced sling reuse technology, building industry trust in their fatigue performance. “Today we have a proven fatigue performance model for assessing sling lifetime, along with safe, reliable lifting plans,” said Marcel van der Molen, Sales Director at Lankhorst Ropes. “Our ability to produce slings with consistent length accuracy has been critical in establishing confidence in this technology.”
