Swiss marine power innovator WinGD will supply ammonia-fuelled X-DF-A engines for four new medium gas carriers (MGCs) being built by HD Hyundai Mipo for Trafigura, a global commodities leader. Each 45,000m³ vessel will be powered by a six-cylinder 6X52DF-A engine featuring high-pressure selective catalytic reduction.
This deal highlights the growing importance of ammonia as a clean energy carrier and expands WinGD’s portfolio of orders for ammonia-capable vessels.
“Trafigura selected our technology based on our demonstration of X-DF-A’s development and strong performance indicators,” said Benny Hilström, Vice President of Market Development at WinGD. “With the first X-DF-A engine deliveries set for mid-2025, we will have considerable commissioning experience before these units are delivered.”
Recent tests have confirmed the X-DF-A engine’s ability to run at full load with just 5% pilot fuel. The engine matches diesel thermal efficiency while cutting NOx emissions and keeping ammonia and N₂O emissions below 10 ppm and 3 ppm, respectively.
The engines are scheduled for delivery between early 2027 and early 2028.
