Sarens has successfully completed the weighing and loadout of the 7,000-tonne Hornsea Topside Z01 at Aibel’s MTP Yard in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, marking a major milestone for the Hornsea offshore wind project.
Hornsea 1 and 2, launched in 2020 and 2022, are currently the world’s largest offshore wind farms. Hornsea 3, set to open in 2027, will continue the legacy. Sarens has been involved in the project since its inception and was entrusted with this critical phase on behalf of Aibel Norway and Ørsted.
To execute the operation, Sarens deployed advanced heavy-lifting and transport equipment, including 387 axle lines of SPMTs, 16 Power Pack Units, 9 jacks (400T), 29 jacks (500T), and multiple load cells and hydraulic power units. The Topside itself measures 73.6m in length, 50.6m in width, and 40m in height.
A major challenge was the low load-bearing capacity of the quayside. Sarens addressed this by performing meticulous CAudl calculations to ensure ground bearing pressure remained under 5 tons/m² throughout the operation. A ten-member team executed the transport between March 7 and April 8, 2025, with utmost precision and safety.
“The team showed exceptional commitment to safety and timely execution,” said Robert Suh, Project Manager at Sarens.
Sarens continues to reinforce its position as a global leader in heavy lifting and engineered transport, with key roles in major offshore wind projects including France’s Saint-Nazaire and the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project in the U.S.
