Indra has launched the European SMAUG (Smart Maritime and Underwater Guardian) RDI project to enhance port security and detect underwater threats. Part of the EU’s Horizon Europe program, the initiative unites 22 partners from seven European countries to combat illicit trafficking and safeguard maritime infrastructure.
With over 80% of global trade conducted by sea, the need for advanced security measures is critical. SMAUG integrates Indra’s iSIM solution, combining AI-driven security management with advanced underwater detection, sonar scanning, and autonomous surveillance vessels. Key detection methods include acoustic monitoring, high-resolution sonar inspections, and coordinated autonomous underwater vehicle operations.
The €6 million project also aims for interoperability with the EU’s Common Information Sharing Environment (CISE), facilitating real-time data exchange between member states.
“SMAUG is a major step in reinforcing maritime security and international cooperation,” said Juan Román Martínez, head of Indra’s SMAUG project. By leveraging cutting-edge technology, Indra continues to enhance global maritime safety under its ‘Tech for Trust’ vision.
