Econowind Secures €1 Million to Advance VentoFoil XL

Rate this post

Dutch maritime innovator Econowind has secured €1 million from Invest International to develop and test its VentoFoil XL, a 24-30 meter wind sail designed to cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 15%. Inspired by aviation technology, the steel sail aims to enhance efficiency for large vessels.

Econowind has successfully produced smaller VentoFoils for coastal shipping. Now, with the XL model, it targets the deep-sea market, comprising around 50,000 vessels. These ships consume significant fuel, making wind-assisted propulsion a key step toward decarbonization. Two prototypes will be developed and tested within two years.

Invest International is also providing export financing to support Econowind’s expansion. The funding enables the design, construction, and rigorous testing of the prototypes on land and at sea, with project completion expected by summer 2027.

Michiel Slootweg, Director at Invest International, emphasized the importance of supporting sustainable maritime innovation, citing Econowind’s partnerships with Damen Shipyards and major shipping companies as key drivers for global expansion.

Econowind CEO Frank Nieuwenhuis highlighted the company’s vision: “With this investment, we can accelerate our deep-sea market focus. Having delivered over 100 sails for smaller vessels, it is now time for the VentoFoil XL.”

Invest International, in collaboration with NOM and Horizon Flevoland, contributed an additional €2 million in equity. As shipping accounts for 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, wind-powered solutions like the VentoFoil XL are crucial for a greener future.
