The World Shipping Council (WSC) has welcomed the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass, which balances sustainability with economic growth and forms the foundation for the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. However, WSC is urging the Commission to recognize liner shipping’s investments in Europe and provide greater support in decarbonising supply chains while ensuring open trade and stable sea routes.
WSC President and CEO Joe Kramek praised the EU’s approach: “We are happy to see the Commission’s recognition that decarbonisation can drive competitiveness and its commitment to intertwine it with EU economic, competition, and trade policies.”
The initiative includes measures to de-risk investment in renewable energy and low-carbon transport fuels, strengthening Europe as a maritime energy hub.
With 90% of EU trade moving by sea, the Commission’s commitment to streamlining regulations and reducing administrative burdens is a crucial step forward. WSC supports the creation of a barrier-free maritime space, the elimination of intra-EU customs formalities, and harmonized border controls.
The Council also emphasized the importance of industry partnerships, ensuring that policies support both environmental goals and trade competitiveness in the evolving global market.
