Specialist lifting equipment manufacturer, Modulift, has played a key role in advancing civil engineering works at the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, with its lifting systems aiding in the installation of critical infrastructure. One recent milestone saw the successful installation of the 730-tonne reactor cavity precast pool using Modulift’s underslung beams, supported by “Big Carl,” the world’s largest crane. This marks a significant step towards the completion of the UK’s first new nuclear power station in over a generation.

The main civil engineering works at Hinkley Point C are being delivered by BYLOR, a joint venture between Bouygues Travaux Publics and Laing O’Rourke. Modulift, appointed in 2022 for its innovative approach to specialized lifting, has provided custom-designed equipment to meet the unique challenges posed by this large-scale infrastructure project.

Artur Osicki, Temporary Works Lead at BYLOR, emphasized the importance of Modulift’s role, saying, “Modulift custom lifting beams play a crucial role in the ongoing construction of Hinkley Point C, supporting the installation of key infrastructure elements. Their reputation for precision engineering and quality assurance gives us confidence that all equipment complies with UK regulations. Each custom piece of equipment comes with comprehensive User Instructions to ensure safe and efficient operations on site.”

Once complete, Hinkley Point C is set to deliver zero-carbon electricity to approximately 6 million homes, reinforcing its role in driving the UK’s clean energy future.
