Mammoet has commenced operations on the construction of a new combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in Altbach/Deizisau, Germany, a key project that will pave the way for the future use of green hydrogen. The plant, commissioned by energy provider EnBW, marks a critical step in Germany’s energy transition. Starting in 2026, the site will shift from coal to gas for electricity and heat production, with a long-term goal of integrating low-carbon or green hydrogen by the 2030s.

The top priority of this project is ensuring uninterrupted energy supply to both households and industry. To achieve this, EnBW sought out reliable partners with proven expertise. Mammoet, known for its experience in power plant construction, was selected due to its customized engineering solutions and comprehensive feasibility studies. The company had previously demonstrated its capabilities during the dismantling of Block 1 at EnBW’s Neckarwestheim nuclear power plant.

Mammoet’s scope of work for the CCGT plant includes just-in-time delivery, handling and unloading, interim storage, and the installation of critical components like heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs), turbines, generators, and transformers.

“A completely new concept was developed in close collaboration with the client,” said Andreas Franzke, Sales Manager and Segment Lead for Power at Mammoet in Germany. “This approach ensures a secure energy supply, fewer interfaces, and smoother processes on-site.”

To avoid disruptions, Mammoet recommended the construction of a temporary jetty, allowing unloading for the construction site without burdening the power plant’s fuel loading infrastructure. A 1,350-tonne crawler crane will manage heavy lifting tasks from a single location, supported by Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs), a customized gantry system, and other specialized equipment.

The project is being executed in partnership with the Sener Bonatti joint venture, with Mammoet playing a vital role in the energy transition for Baden-Württemberg. Franzke added, “We are proud to contribute to this important construction project, a significant step toward the future use of green hydrogen in Germany and beyond.”
