Liebherr’s R 980 SME crawler excavator, custom-built for Backes Transport und Schlackenaufbereitung GmbH, tackles the demanding task of loading hot slag with ease. Equipped with a dump bucket capable of handling large volumes of slag, this machine boasts special safety features such as a fire-fighting system and heat shielding for exposed lines and hoses.
Developed by Liebherr’s Application Center in Colmar, France, the R 980 SME meets specific customer requirements by analyzing requests and tailoring solutions accordingly. This collaborative approach ensures quick response times and seamless integration into production processes.
Backes Transport anticipates increased productivity with the R 980 SME, thanks to its manoeuvrability, user-friendly operation, and low fuel consumption. Despite its weight, the excavator offers efficient performance and comfort, contributing to smoother slag-handling operations.
Currently, Backes employs two R 980 SMEs alongside older Liebherr models for slag loading and transportation.
