Carousel Logistics, a specialist in-night delivery provider, has collaborated with Varamis Rail to establish a fully electric rail cargo route connecting Birmingham and Glasgow.
After a successful trial, this electric route is now integrated into Carousel Logistics’ pan-European delivery network. Varamis Rail, UK’s electric-only express rail freight operator, repurposes former passenger trains to transport cargo at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour between the Midlands and Scotland. This environmentally friendly initiative supports Carousel Logistics’ journey toward carbon neutrality and provides faster transportation compared to diesel alternatives.
The electric train is powered by Network Rail’s overhead lines sourced from green energy. By operating five nights a week, the electric route is estimated to save 1,350 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually while enhancing operational efficiency for in-night deliveries by Carousel Logistics. This partnership underscores a commitment to innovative and sustainable cargo transport solutions.
