deugro and dteq Transport Engineering Solutions completed the multimodal delivery of two power transformers from Germany to a project site in Scotland, combining barge transport, coaster shipping, tandem lifting and an 18-axle girder-frame move for the final 74 kilometres.
The transformers were collected from the German manufacturing plant and transported to a nearby RoRo jetty, where they were rolled onto a barge and positioned on pre-installed grillage and stool arrangements.
dteq developed the load-securing and seafastening designs, with teams from deugro Germany and dteq supervising the operation before the barge began a three-day transit along the Rhine to Rotterdam.
At the Port of Rotterdam, the transformers were discharged and transferred to a coaster vessel chartered by deugro for the onward voyage to Scotland. Loading, stowage and securing followed dteq’s lifting and load-securing plans.
After another three-day voyage, the vessel arrived at the Port of Leith in Edinburgh, where deugro UK coordinated the discharge of both units using tandem lifting operations.
For the final 74-kilometre journey to site, deugro deployed an 18-axle girder frame with an overall transport length exceeding 64 metres.
The route was surveyed in advance to identify potential obstacles and restricted sections, while project managers accompanied the convoy together with escort vehicles and personnel positioned at the front and rear.
Both transformers reached the project laydown area on schedule before being installed using a single-direction jack-and-skid operation.
The project brought together deugro teams in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK with dteq’s transport engineering expertise across each stage of the route.
